“Pottenger’s Cats: A Study in Nutrition” is a book written by Francis Marion Pottenger Jr. that explores the effects of different diets on the health and well-being of cats. Pottenger conducted a series of experiments in the 1930s and 1940s to study the impacts of nutrition on feline physiology and development.

The book begins by introducing the premise of the study, in which Pottenger and his team fed groups of cats varying diets. One group received a diet consisting of raw, unprocessed food, including raw meat and raw milk. Another group was fed a diet of cooked and processed food, primarily cooked meat and evaporated milk. Pottenger also examined the effects of these diets on subsequent generations of cats.

The findings of the study revealed significant differences between the two groups of cats. Cats on the raw food diet exhibited optimal health, normal growth, and strong reproductive capabilities. They had sturdy bone structures, healthy teeth, shiny coats, and good resistance to disease. In contrast, cats on the cooked food diet experienced a range of health problems. They suffered from various dental issues, weakened immune systems, reduced fertility, and increased susceptibility to diseases such as allergies, infections, and organ malfunctions. Additionally, the cats on the cooked food diet displayed behavioral abnormalities, including aggression and nervousness.

Pottenger’s study also examined the effects of a switch from a cooked food diet to a raw food diet in the second generation of cats. The results showed that while some of the health issues improved, certain irreversible consequences of the initial diet remained, highlighting the importance of proper nutrition from an early age.

“Pottenger’s Cats” highlights the significance of a natural, unprocessed diet in maintaining optimal health and preventing chronic diseases in cats. The book serves as a reminder of the importance of proper nutrition not only for feline health but also for human health, emphasizing the potential consequences of consuming a diet heavily reliant on processed and cooked foods.
